Responding to high fuel costs and ensuring greater flexibility

Within organizations, the task of fleet or mobility managers is to keep the costs of business travel as low as possible. But in view of the sharply increased prices of petrol and diesel, this is not an easy task.

ALD Automotive enjoys helping you come up with solutions. Jesse Stuiver is a Mobility Consultant at ALD Automotive, and has a number of tips that can reduce the costs of the fleet.

1.    Save on fuel

The largest expense of a fleet is fuel. With every kilometre not driven, you save on these costs and therefore also on CO2 emissions. Before the corona crisis, everyone met face to face and travel was necessary. But now, after the corona crisis, video calling has become commonplace and working from home increasingly popular. So it is very important to ask whether every kilometre driven is really necessary or whether there is another way. This can save you a lot on fuel costs.

Still on the road? Then it pays to avoid filling up along the motorway and to choose filling stations outside the motorway. This can save up to 14 cents per litre of petrol or diesel. We recommend making these price differences transparent to lease car drivers and engaging in dialogue.

2.    Switch to electric driving

Another option to save on fuel costs is to consider switching to electric mobility. This year, petrol and diesel costs increased by an average of 55%, while energy costs increased by an average of 20%. Electric cars have now become an integral part of the street scene. The great thing about electric driving is that there is an increasing number of makes and models available. This makes it an increasingly affordable and sustainable alternative to the regular passenger car.

3.    Go for an alternative solution

There are also other mobility solutions besides cars, such as e-bikes and public transport. Research shows that employees are open to these alternatives; for example, 40% of employees are prepared to travel to work by electric bike if this is facilitated by their organization. It is therefore important that employers consider the various options available for mobility.

4.    Provide flexibility and freedom of choice

Mobility solutions that can be deployed more flexibly and ensure that every employee can easily come to work, if necessary, are becoming increasingly important to think about. To give an example, ALD Automotive has developed ALD Move. With this app, it is possible to plan your trip and compare the various travel options, such as train, e-bike or car. The app shows how much impact the journey has on the environment and how long it will take with each vehicle. The app can be linked to employees' calendars. If an employee has to travel a lot for a day, that day can be planned via the app. You will then get a clear overview and can choose how you want to make the trip.

A mobility card is also available in the app. No more hassle buying tickets or activating e-bikes. The pass allows quick and easy access to all mobility options.
