Occasion lease increasingly popular

Occasion lease increasingly popular

A study of more than 1,000 respondents conducted by leasing company ALD Automotive has shown that the Dutch are increasingly willing to lease a pre-owned vehicle for both business and private use. The lower price is the most common reason given, but sustainability is also an important consideration driving the growing popularity of this type of lease.

22% of the respondents mentioned that they were seriously interested in leasing a pre-owned car, with drivers over 50 being the most interested. The majority of respondents interested in occasion lease are over the age of 45 (54%). New drivers are least interested in occasion lease: only 10% of those aged 18-24 expressed interest in leasing a pre-owned vehicle. Another 13% of the respondents stated that they were not aware of the option of occasion lease, but found the possibility interesting.

Occasion lease popular for lower costs

A large majority (54%) of the 1,000 respondents mentioned price as the main reason for choosing occasion lease. A low-mileage pre-owned vehicle is still in good condition, but it costs less than a car that just rolled out of the factory. For many people, that makes occasion lease a very attractive option. The second-most common reason was the opportunity to drive a car with more options (15%), followed by sustainability at 14%. Lonneke van der Horst, Director of Marketing & Innovation at ALD Automotive: “Cars last longer today, and that presents plenty of opportunities for occasion lease. Leasing a pre-owned car is also increasingly considered to be an acceptable option. We therefore predict strong growth over the coming years.” Rounding out the top-5 reasons were the option of a shorter-term lease contract (12%) and the lower lease vehicle tax rate for company cars (11%).

Well-maintained car main reason for occasion lease

The most important consideration for many people is that the pre-owned vehicle is well-maintained. Both men (40%) and women (49%) stated that the vehicle’s condition was their biggest consideration. Women also considered service to be important (39%), while men placed more value on the costs of the lease or lease tax (39%). Remarkably, among men the vehicle make was only in fourth place (17%), behind the service provided by the leasing company (35%). The vehicle make was fifth place among women (9%), after the car’s comfort level (12%).
