Travel abroad

Will you be using your lease car to travel abroad? If so, read the tips below to ensure a safe and relaxed journey.

Insurance

Perhaps it’s good to know: your lease car is insured in almost all European countries. You can find the list of countries covered on your green card. The insurance policy does not cover some countries, because it is simply not possible to arrange roadside assistance in these countries. These countries are therefore crossed out on the proof of insurance document. The conditions may differ if your company lease car is not insured via us.

The ‘Green Card’

If you travel abroad, we strongly recommend you to ensure that you keep the proof of insurance (the so-called ‘green card’) available at all times. It's available in the My ALD app. In the most popular holiday destinations within the EU, it is sufficient to show a digital copy of the proof of insurance, or to print it out on white A4-format paper.

Caravan or trailer

Via My ALD you can also download a separate proof of insurance document for your caravan or trailer. This proves that the caravan or trailer is covered by liability insurance as long as it is hitched to the lease vehicle. Please note: the full coverage insurance only covers the lease car. You must insure any trailers or caravans yourself.

Requesting an original proof of insurance document

Some countries, such as Albania, Morocco and Turkey, require you to show the original proof of insurance document. You can request this document via Driver Care.

Travel to Morocco or Turkey

If you will be travelling with your lease vehicle to Morocco or Turkey, you must also carry a ‘foreign travel statement’ that has been authenticated with an apostille. An apostille is a sticker or stamp that is issued by a court of law. Make sure to arrange the apostille in time! Other countries, such as Tunisia and Ukraine, also require a foreign travel statement and apostille, but our insurance policy does not cover these countries. You will find the statement and more information about the procedure in My ALD.

Winter tyres

If winter tyres are included in your lease agreement, then you can have them mounted at the dealer. The tyres can be changed in October, November and December. They will be changed back in March and April. Make sure that the replacement of your winter and summer tyres takes place at the same dealer. You can find the service partners easily using My ALD.

Things you are required to carry

Many countries require drivers to carry several important documents and accessories with them in the car. These regulations apply to almost every European country. We have listed some of the most common and important items below, but we always recommend that you find out which regulations apply in the country or countries you will be travelling to or through.

  • Driving licence
  • Valid proof of insurance document
  • Damage claim form
  • Car registration document
  • Valid proof of identification
  • Accessories, such as a safety vest, hazard triangle, first aid kit, spare lamps and a fire extinguisher.

Final check of your car

Before going on a long drive with your car, it is important to make sure that the car is in top condition. We recommend that you check the following before you leave:

  • tyre pressure;
  • the oil level;
  • whether the windscreen wiper fluid needs to be topped up;
  • whether you have all the necessary accessories on board (lifehammer, first aid kit, towing and jump leads, etc.);
  • whether the air conditioning system is clean.

You can easily check the above yourself. If, based on the mileage, maintenance (overdue or otherwise) should be carried out, a message appears in the dashboard, or something isn't working properly, you can schedule an appointment with the dealer. You can find the service partners easily using My ALD.

Claiming roadside assistance

Our 24-hour roadside assistance is standing by to provide help anywhere in the Netherlands or abroad. In some cases, you may be required to pay for repair costs yourself while abroad. If so, you can conveniently claim reimbursement for these expenses by uploading a photo of the receipt or invoice in My ALD

Changing drivers

If you have a long trip ahead, you can always change drivers, as long as the other driver is also in possession of a valid driving licence for the vehicle.
