New car and long delivery times: here's what you can do to keep on driving

The delivery time for a new car used to be about three months on average. This has increased significantly due to the worldwide chip shortage. It has even gotten to the point where you now have to start thinking about your next new lease car, or an alternative, a year before your lease contract expires.

We discuss how you can bridge the period between an expiring lease contract and the delivery of a new car, and the solutions ALD Automotive has in store for you, with Timo van der Wal, Sales Manager at ALD Automotive. He has put together a few reflections for inspiration.

1.    Renewing your current contract

Leased cars are usually still in (very) good condition after the contract has expired because they have been serviced regularly and are therefore well maintained. A good and perhaps the easiest solution is to continue driving your current lease car. It is quite easy to extend the current contract from, for example, 48 to 60 months. Please bear in mind that you must then ride out this extension in its entirety. But especially if a new car is still a year away, this is a realistic solution.

2.    Flexible short lease

A solution that offers the best of both worlds: more flexible than leasing, and cheaper than renting. An option that makes it easy to bridge a long delivery time. You can rent a car from 1 to 24 months via ALD Flex. The contract is also easy to change within the term and you will always be charged the most advantageous rate. Do you take out a contract for one month, but it turns out that you need the car for six months, or vice versa? No problem, with ALD Flex you can easily adjust this.

3.    Batch deals

Popular models are often purchased and pre-ordered by ALD Automotive in larger quantities, known as batch deals. That means that these models are usually in stock. Although these are more standard configured cars that do not offer additional options, these cars are readily available. So lease car drivers can always check which cars are available through the batch deals, as these naturally do not have long waiting times.

4.    Occasion lease

Finally, you may consider giving a lease car a second lease life. Pre-owned cars can be leased from ALD through the occasion lease option. These are usually more favourable lease contracts from two years onwards. The advantage of pre-owned lease cars is that they are a maximum of four years old and always well maintained. With this more sustainable leasing option, because you aren't going for new, you get the car delivered quickly as it is usually already roadworthy.
